“Heroes and Heretics” tonight on Political Analysis.
Exactly 50 years ago today, on July 10th, 1962, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., along with Ralph Abernathy, was convicted in Albany, Georgia for charges arising from their arrests in December, 1961 for demonstrating at the Albany City hall in Georgia. In her toast to “Heroes and Heretics,” Political Analysis host Sandy LeonVest pays special tribute to Martin Luther King Jr, airing clips from his sermon delivered at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on April 30, 1967. She also airs clips from the not-so-widely-celebrated, but nonetheless heroic (and heretical) Emma Goldman. Considered a “dangerous anarchist” by US leaders and the mainstream media, civil rights leader, radical feminist, labor advocate and anti-war activist Emma Goldman was unceremoniously deported from the US on December 21st, 1919, for speaking out against the US role in World War One and for opposing the draft — at a time when to do so was considered treasonous by most Americans.
