This evening’s radio show is honoring the Earth and Earth Day. My guest is Gaia, Mother EarthHerself.
I will focus on the Environment–what we’ve done to our beautiful Earth, the dire consequences of this mindless destruction, and what we can do about it. This will also include a psychological analysis of man’s quest for power, in the forms of money, prestige and unbridled drive toward dominance and acquisition.
I have been an environmentalist and an activist since a young teen, long before I could drive. My father was kind enough to drive me to demonstrations in Bridgeport, Ct. near where I lived from an early age. I couldn’t believe what people were willing to do to our environment for the sake of profit.
My work as a therapist was always informed by my appreciation of Deep Ecology and through my own work, gave rise to a form of eco-psychology, a form of spiritual psychology rooted in deep reverence and celebration of the Sacred Earth Mother. These will be discussed on today’s show.

Mitchell’s guest this evening is the inimitable Yasuhiko Genku Kimura, philosopher; ordained Zen Buddhist priest, scholar; teacher of esoteric spiritual philosophies of the East and the West; creator and leader of transformational programs; consultant and adviser to leaders in business, science, and cultural organizations; researcher of science and scientific paradigms; translator of ancient Japanese and Chinese scriptures; and author in the fields of spiritual philosophy, evolutionary ethics, integral science, and business leadership.
Mr. Kimura is considered one of the most original, visionary thinkers in the field of integral and evolutionary philosophy. He is recognized for his unique ability to integrate advanced Western scientific thought with intuitive Eastern spiritual insight to bring about radical and lasting transformation in individuals and organizations. Hisnumerous writings and seminars are acclaimed for their originality and spiritual depth.
In the field of self-development, Mr. Kimura teaches a uniquely integral way of consciously directed self-evolution by creating a synergistic, evolutionary structure for transformational self- study which is incomparable in its depth, scope, and power—without the usual external authority or guru-follower structure and without the dependency on any particular conceptual models or frameworks.
Yasuhiko was interviewed by such outstanding thinkers as Ken Wilber, who recognized Kimura’s intuitively “integral thinking”.
Mitchell interviewed Yasuhiko on his TV program going back to Spring 2006, and has invited him back to be a guest on the radio show in Spring 2012, a period of great growth and gestation for these two colleagues and friends.

Today Mitchell will speak about some of the weakest links in our society, from 11,000,000 children here in the wealthiest nation going to bed hungry every night, to tent cities across America, to bearing witness to the injustices we see in our society about race, ethnicity, gender, age. And then on to the atrocities of what is called our medical system, which actually mocks real healthcare, which should always be holistic in approach. In short, we will look at the systemic degradation of a society, which parallels the downfall of Rome, top-heavy and collapsing.
We will also discuss the new birth and solutions on the way. The phone lines will be open for questions and comments, something we haven’t offered in some time.
Part of our solution is to address “inner ecology”, what is the ground of our thinking and feeling? What determines, what defines our outlook and informs our decisions?
The other part of our solution is “outer ecology”, how do we manage our world and our decisions in society? What choices do we have and what can we do to help shape a world we want to see?

Mitchell’s radio guest this evening has been on A Better World TV several times, the popular, funny and well-loved Tibetan Buddhist Teacher and author, Lama Surya Das.
Tempted to call him “the Jewish comedian of the Tibetan Buddhist Borscht Belt”, his open heart and delightful humor hints at the accuracy of the comment.
And indeed, the Tibetan Buddhist community, the beautiful jewel that it is, so enriching our world, could, nonetheless, stand a little more Jewish humor and this evening’s interview is an example of it.
Surya and Mitchell’s discussion about his latest book, Buddha Standard Time, is a timely and a valuable guide to one’s coming to enjoy the beauty of the present-as-a-gift and the “timelessness of Now”, where the stream of time–old age, sickness and death, as the Buddhists refer to it, for a moment, ceases to exist.
Tune in and enjoy this show as two Jewish Buddhists discuss some of these rich, deep and timeless subjects.
