Mass Incarceration:  The civil rights issue of our time

Chris Hedges is one of our nation’s most insightful cultural critics, social and political activists and investigative journalists. He is also Presbyterian minister and a visiting university lecturer. For two decades Chris was a foreign correspondent in war zones and conflicts in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans, having reported for The New York Times and other news outlets from over 50 countries.  While at the Times, he received the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for reporting on global terrorism. That same year he received Amnesty International’s Global Award for Human Rights Journalism.   Chris has authored many bestselling books. His most recent  book will be released shortly — “Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison” —  a heart-rendering account of Chris’ eight years as a humanities teacher in the East Jersey State Prison in Rahway and the stories and insights about the internal transformation of his student inmates who had spent years in maximum security prisons for severe crimes, including murder.
